I'm fine with the ending as it is, and Wrath is still 5/5 for me, but I think it would have been more poignant that way. I honestly think the ending would have been better if Corban died. Just as a few last thoughts, questions, and critiques. There was also plenty of excellent smaller-scale combat the duel between Corban ben Thannon and the Kadoshim-possessed Sumur may be the greatest fantasy duel I've ever heard, especially when you trace Corban's journey from a boy who couldn't stand up to town bullies to Kadoshim-slayer and someone who can match blades with Asroth himself.Ĥ. I'm usually not a big fan of massive battle scenes (I'm much more of a small-scale action guy), but Gwynne writes fantastic war scenes that managed to keep me hooked to the pages. The action in this series is truly on a level of its own. The scene where Corban offers Calidus to Viathun was awesome.ģ. It's a book about our protagonists finally releasing the wrath and vengeance on the Fallen. The first three books are just our good guys getting beaten into the dirt again and again, and when it finally looks like the tide is turning in the second half of Book 3, we're left with that ending (man am I glad Storm survived, otherwise that would have broken me). The ending was just so satisfying because of all of the pain our protagonists have suffered, losing family, home, kingdoms to Asroth. I enjoyed most of the POV's, honestly Camlin, Fidele, Coralen, on the side of Good, and even Uthas and Lykos's chapters were interesting.Ģ. The series really points out the dangers of committing atrocities for 'the greater good,' which I thought was a great touch. His conflict between serving his blood-brother, High King Nathair, and fighting for good was highly engaging.

Veradis ben Lamar may be one of the most interesting, three-dimensional characters I've read. Reading Maquin's journey was an incredible experience, and watching him finally get his vengeance in Wrath was exhilarating, and watching Fidele die was heartbreaking. He's flawed, stubborn, and makes mistakes, but you can understand his reasoning and he never feels 'pure good' to an obnoxious or unrelatable level. Corban ben Thannon may be my favorite Chosen One character of all time. The series is by no means the most original or groundbreaking work out there, but it subverts many fantasy tropes and executes others tremendously well. Evil Emperor in Medieval Times'-style of fantasy. It's an excellent modern execution and interpretation of the 'Chosen one v.
